New York Yankees - Greatest Players Of All-Time From The Yankees

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009
Freddie Brister asked:

We all want to know the greatest players of all times. It is easy to determine them because of the fact that their statistics are soaring high and most of the time they receive awards for it. They do not necessarily need to win lots of games. It will always reflect on their individual performance. Sometimes they are even inducted to the Hall of Fame Just to be recognized and not many players receive this opportunity. You cannot miss the best players of all time because the crowd loves them and the other team tries to read them. In baseball, there were lots of good players and all of them deserve to be recognized.

However, the greatest thing that we can find out is to identify the key players of the team that won most of the titles for the World Series. Not many teams get the opportunity to win as much as 26 World Series Titles. Only one team who can do this and they belong in the Eastern Division of the American League. They have the most titles ever one in this sport and it is not other than the famous New York Yankees.

Yes, there so much about this team that people love. Below are some of their best players of all time:

1. **** Ruth- He played for this team for fourteen years starting 1920-34. His former team owner sold him out in order to finance a Broadway show. He performed well with the team. It was no doubt because this legend has always been the number one batter in the hearts of the people. His records are outstanding that is why he have helped the team win around seven World Series Titles. This person is now one of the names that you see in the Hall of Fame.

2. Lou Gehrig- He was known as the The Iron Horse. He played for the team for them for 16 years starting 1923-39. He worked hand in hand with Ruth and their statistics were both very competitive. However, his performance declined when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis wherein his brain neurons started degenerating as well as the cells of his brain causing him involuntary movements that are not normal. He was the youngest baseball player to join the hall of fame in 1939 (even before he retired). Unfortunately, he died in 1941 with his impending illness

3. Joe DiMaggio- He was one of the anchors of the team when Ruth and Gehrig left. He played for the New York Yankees for 11 years. He helped the team win 9 World Series titles and 3 of those years he was hailed as the MVP. This guy is also one of the Hall of Famers.

These are just few of the baseball players who played for this team and contributed a lot for the Yankees to stay on top. Their track records speak well of how good they were. No wonder this team has been one of the top contenders for all time. If they have all of the batting skills of these players, then probably they will have a chance of bringing home the bacon.

Baseball Nicknames

Monday, June 8th, 2009
Aron Wallad asked:
___________________________________________________________________

Seems like there is no end to the number of nicknames there are in baseball.

Here is a list of some of these dandies.

The animal nicknames. Some are fierce and make you quiver or some just make you take notice. Like “The Big Cat” for Johnny Mize, “Godzilla” for Hideki Matsui, “Moose” for Bill Skowron, “The Iron Horse” for Lou Gehrig, or “King Kong “ for Charlie Keller. Other animals are not so scary. Like “Ducky” for Joe Medwick, or “The Mule” for Yankee Killer Frank Lary., and “The Penguin” for Ron Cey. Goose Goslin was better known as “Goose” than his real name of Leon. Maybe “The Bird” ( Mark Fidrych) and “Mickey Mouse” for Cliff Melton were names that tried to trick us. Who would be scared to bat against a bird? Before he got hurt “The Bird” used to mow ‘em down. And then there is one of my favorites – “The Silver Fox” for Duke Snider.

Then there are the Royal nicknames. Names of Nobility. These names are fitting to baseball immortals, Like “The Sultan of Swat” (Babe Ruth), “Prince Albert” (Albert Pujols), “Rajah” (Rogers Hornsby),” Prince Hal” ( Hal Schumacher), “King Carl “ (Carl Hubbel). “Duke” for Edwin Charles Snider is more recognizable than his first name of Edwin. And another one of my favorites “The Count” – John Montefusco. Do you think the person that was anointing these greats with their nickname was thinking majestically?

You know where they are from nicknames like “Memphis Bill” for Bill Terry, “Dominican Dandy” for Jaun Marichal, “The Reading Rifle” for Carl Furillo, “The Fordham Flash” for Frankie Frisch, “Country” for Enos Slaughter, “Commerce Comet” for Mickey Mantle, “The Kentucky Colonel” for Earle Combs and of course “The Georgia Peach” for Ty Cobb. Hey who’s from Jersey? “Jersey Joe” Stripp that’s who.

“The Old Professor” (Casey Stengel ), “The Little Professor” (Dom DiMaggio) “Teddy Ballgame” ( Ted Williams ) and “ Donnie Baseball” ( Don Mattingly ) seem to indicate that these men knew something about the game. While names like Dizzy Dean, Daffy Dean, Dazzy Vance or “The Brat“for Eddie Stanky, seem to tell another story about these guys. Maybe they were a head case?

Names that depict respect. “Mr Cub” (Ernie Banks) , “The Man” (Stan Musial) , “The Yankee Clipper” ( Joe DiMaggio), “Mr October” ( Reggie Jackson) “Mr November” (Derek Jeter)and “The Master” for Mel Ott. And then there are names that do not illuminate respect like “Fat Freddie” for Freddie Fitzsimmons or “Crab” for Johnnie Evers or “The Sphinx” for Don Mossi.

And nicknames of strength – “The Iron Horse” (Lou Gehrig), “Iron Man” McGinnity, “The Iron Man” (Cal Ripken), “The Man of Steal” (Rickey Henderson), ”The Wall” (Thurman Munson). These are guys I want on my team.

Some nicknames have fascinated me. Like “Jack The Ripper” What does this say about Jack Clark? Twinkletoes Selkirk the old Yankee infielder must have had a great time explaining that one. Leo Durocher had an interesting moniker – Leo The Lip. “The Big Hurt” for Frank Thomas started out as a name that told a story about how he destroyed the other team. Later on in his career does the name describe his ongoing state of his own physical condition? “Boog” What is a Boog Mr Powell?

And last but not least are names that I just enjoy. “Hammerin” Hank Aaron, The Kid

(Ted Williams), “Ryan’s Express” (Nolan Ryan),”The Rocket” (Roger Clemens),”The Vacuum Cleaner” (Brooks Robinson),”The Wizard of Oz” (Ozzie Smith). And of course there is my nickname “ Hoch Fleisch.

Pass this on to someone you think would get a kick out of reading it.

Aron Wallad asked:

I have a great amount of respect for the top teams of baseball. Being able to excel at a very high level is what I love about what some of these teams accomplished.

1902 Pittsburgh Pirates

They had a record of 103 Wins and 36 Losses and won the Pennant by 27.5 games. They scored 775 runs and allowed 440 runs. The Pirates had five pitchers with 15 wins and eras of under 2.55. They were Jack Chesbro, Deacon Phillippe, Sam Leever, Jesse Tannenbill and Ed Doheny. Luckily for any opponent there was no World Series in 1902.

1903 Boston Pilgrims (Red Sox)

Captured the pennant by 14.5 games and won the World Series over a great Pittsburgh team five games to three. Had three twenty game winners, led by Cy Young.

1905 New York Giants

Record of 105 Wins and 48 Losses, Won World Series beating The Philadelphia A’s in five games. They scored 780 runs and gave up 505 runs. Had five pitchers with 15 at least 15 wins led by Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity. Christy Mathewson won three World Series games. All three were shutouts. He pitched on October 9, 12, and 14th and gave a total of 14 hits and one walk in 27 innings. One of the greatest World Series pitching performances of all time by Mr Mathewson.

1927 New York Yankees

With a 110 and 44 record they won the pennant by 19 games and beat the Pirates 4-0 in the World Series. They scored 975 runs and allowed 599 runs. They numbered six future Hall of Fame players: Ruth, Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Earl Coombs, Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock. All three outfielders batted at least 337. They were Ruth, Combs and Bob Meusel.
___________________________________________________________________

1929 Philadelphia A’s

Won pennant by 19 games. Outscoring their opposition 901 to 615. Winning 104 games and losing 46 established themselves as one of the great teams. Won World Series 4-1 over the Cubs. Had five future Hall of Famers. They were Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane, Lefty Grove and Eddie Collins.

1932 New York Yankees

Won the pennant by 13 games, outscoring their opponents 1002 runs to 724 runs. Their starting lineup (excluding pitchers), had six future Hall of Famers and two All Stars. Hall of Famers are Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Bill Dickey, Joe Sewell and Earle Coombs. All Stars were Frank Crosetti and Ben Chapman. Their entire team of positional players had either All Stars or Hall of Famers. The pitching staff had three future Hall of Famers. Herb Pennock, Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing. Won World Series over the Cubs 4 games to none.

1934 St Louis Cardinals

Won the World Series 4 games to 3 over a great Tiger team. Five future Hall of Famers on the team. Check out this group. Dizzy Dean, Dazzy Vance, Frankie Frisch, Leo Durocher and Joe Medwick.

1936 New York Yankees

Scored 1065 runs and allowed 731. Won pennant by 19.5 games and beat the NY Giants 4 games to 2 in the World Series. They had five players with at least 100 RBIs led by Lou Gehrig with 152. Joe DiMaggio had 125 and was followed by Bill Dickey with 109 RBIs. Tony Lazzeri and George Selkirk were tied with 107 RBIs. Six players batted over 300 and no regular had an average of less than 287. Six pitchers with at least 12 wins.

I had some great teams in this list. Wait till you see part two.

Feel Free to pass this article on to the people in your life you care about.

Murderers’ Row - The 1927 New York Yankees

Saturday, June 6th, 2009
Fr Penn asked:

Widely known for “5-o¡¯clock lightning”, the 1927 New York Yankees boasted awesome offensive power. Intimidating all of baseball with the bats of **** Ruth and Lou Gehrig, this team was unstoppable. Many of their opponents built up hope slowly in the early stages of a contest, only to be “struck” with an unceasing barrage some time around 5-o¡¯clock. Baseball games routinely started at 3:30 pm back in the 1920s and generally ended somewhere around 6:00 pm. The ‘27 Yanks usually delivered a crippling offensive blow to their opponents in the late innings, thus the phrase “5-o’clock lightning.” Of course, they had no lights for playing at night, all games were day games. Major League Baseball was settling into its widely held superstitions and routine, repetitiveness and all of the mythical and obsession-based ceremonial acts that still exist to this day. The 3:30 start time was one of those mystified traditions that players did not like to break from. Many considered it bad luck if a game was to start at any other time, or to start early or late if scheduled for 3:30 pm.

“Murderers¡¯ Row” was actually a nickname for the New York Yankees first used in 1919 before **** Ruth was imported from the Boston Red Sox. A sports reporter had used it as he was describing the spring training projected line-up. It was actually hype more than anything else, although the 1919 line-up was very good, even without Ruth. The **** arrived and the term was used loosely here and there, but never really took root until it was widely used in the 1927 season. **** Ruth hit his high mark of 60 homeruns in ¡¯27 and the New York Yankees won 110 games, losing only 44 times. They also swept the World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates and then repeated the feat again in 1928. **** Ruth hit 161 homers from the 1926 season through the 1928 season. The **** also hit for a high average during this period, with a three-year batting average of .350. During this stretch, he collected 452 RBIs as well. His single season home run mark of 60 would stand for 34 years.

Lou Gehrig, believe it or not, was voted the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1927. He hit .373 that year, better than Ruths¡¯ .356. He also added 47 homeruns and 175 RBIs. The combination of Ruth and Gehrig struck fear into all of the Major League players that were playing the game in the “Murderers¡¯ Row” era. These two players, however, weren¡¯t all the ¡¯27 Yankees had. It seemed they had all the best players of the time, and not just offensive players but solid defensive players as well. However, the most astonishing numbers from this alleged “greatest team ever” came from the offense; the lead off hitter and centerfielder, Earle Combs, had an on-base percentage of .414, hit .356 and had 62 walks and 231 hits. Tony Lazzeri played second base and hit 18 homers that year, finishing third in the American League home run race. Ruth and Gehrig, of course, were I-2. Bob Meusel played the outfield (left or right) and batted .337 with 103 runs batted in. He also piled up 24 stolen bases. Lazzeri had 22 swipes. Other notable offensive minded “Murderers¡¯ Row” members were Johnny Grabowski, Joe Dugan, Pat Collins and Mark Koenig. As a team, the ¡¯27 Yankees¡¯ batting average was a staggering .307. They out-scored their opponents by 376 runs and broke a lot of defensive-minded hearts by scoring 975 runs that year.

“Murderers¡¯ Row” also boasted some of the best pitching in the Major Leagues in 1927; Dutch Ruether, Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock and Wilcy Moore, an early relief prot¨¦g¨¦. Hoyt, Shocker and Moore were the top three pitchers in the league, based on wins and earned run average (ERA). These three amassed a combined total in wins of 59. Defensively, the very same players that drew massive crowds with their legendary “5-o¡¯clock lightning” were making a statement with their gloves as well. Fielding the ball was not as big of an attention-getter as their explosive offense, but they did it well enough to hold their opponents to 599 total runs scored.

These trends were not just evident in the 1927 Yankees, but all through the middle of the decade. The Yankees¡¯ success continued, and the term “Murderers¡¯ Row” stuck. It was carried all the way to the 1936-39 Yankees, who won 4 World Series in a row. Professional Baseball officially “crowned” the 1927 Yankees as the best overall team of all-time in 1969, during the Centennial celebration of Major League Baseball.

Baseball Tickets Continue to be a Summer Hit

Saturday, June 6th, 2009
Al Terry asked:

Baseball happens to be one of the most popular ball games in the United States. Though the other two popular team sports -basketball and football - are also categorized as ball games in the United States and North America, the popularity of baseball is such that the word ‘ballgame’ is usually referred to baseball and by association, the baseball field is known as the ballpark.

On the professional and amateur levels, baseball is popular in the Americas, East Asia, and in parts of the Caribbean. In the United States, it is the national pastime, and is quite a popular sport in countries, such as Japan, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Panama, South Korea, and Taiwan, among others. It is thought that baseball evolved from a bat and ball game called ‘Rounders’ that was brought to North America by the British and Irish immigrants.

In the beginning of the 18th century, the modern version of baseball started to develop in America, and by the 19th century, it came to be widely accepted as the national game. Major League Baseball (MLB), which handles baseball games in America, has in attendance the number of spectators equal to the attendance in all the other professional team sports combined.

Baseball And New York

New York, which offers the highest form of entertainment in the world, also offers its baseball fans great sporting entertainment. New York has two teams that play in the Major League Baseball.

One is the New York Yankees that is based at the Yankee Stadium. It started its career as a baseball team more than a century back in 1901 in Baltimore. Soon the team moved to New York, but it was only in April 1913 that it came to be called the Yankees. They built their own stadium, a triple decked structure – baseball’s first – in 1923 and had a capacity of 70,000.

Babe Ruth, one of the legends of the game, and considered as one of the greatest to have graced the game, played for the Yankees

The second professional baseball team of New York is the New York Mets that plays out of Shea Stadium. In comparison, it is a ‘relatively’ new team, and was formed in 1961.

New York City also has two Minor League Baseball teams – the Staten Island Yankees - affiliated to the New York Yankees, and the Brooklyn Cyclones - affiliated to the New York Mets.

Along with the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, 28 other teams from across the United States represent the National League and the American League to make up the MLB.

The Tickets

With these 30 teams playing the pre-season, the games of the season, as well as the post-season games, the baseball calendar is always full. The fans of these baseball teams passionately support their teams at both, the home and away games.

Baseball tickets are always at a premium as they are sold out as soon as the schedule is announced. Ticket brokers have resources at their command to arrange your baseball tickets for you for the games of your choice.

Great Tips for Purchasing Yankees Baseball Tickets

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009
Al Terry asked:

New York Yankees’ baseball tickets are always at a premium, especially when the games are played at home at the Yankee Stadium. Even for the away games, the Yankees baseball tickets are mostly all sold out, as the fans of the opponents would love to see them lose. The New York Yankees are a team everyone loves to ****! Yankees baseball tickets are very difficult to procure, whether during the season or for the postseason games. These tickets are purchased months before the games, as soon as the schedules are announced.

Yankees baseball tickets can be purchased from the venues where the games are to be played. When completely sold out, these tickets can be procured through the services of the ticket brokers. These brokers are licensed brokers, and members of the National Association of Ticket Brokers. The member brokers are bound by a code of conduct and are very fair in their dealings with their patrons.

Many people do try to procure their Yankees baseball tickets from other dubious sources. These are the re-sale forums; the auction sites, such as eBay; as well as the many scalpers who are found around the venue of the games. In most cases, you are not assured that the Yankees baseball tickets you purchase through these sources are genuine. Many people have lost their money when they find that the Yankees baseball tickets they have purchased from these sources are fake.

The Team

The New York Yankees started out as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901. The Baltimore franchise soon became defunct, and was sold for $18,000 to Frank Farrell – owner of a casino and several pool halls - and to Bill Devery – the very notorious ex-Chief of Police, New York City. They moved base to Manhattan, and the team was known as the New York Highlanders. They played at Hilltop Park, the highest spot in Manhattan. The team was officially renamed the New York Yankees in April 1913 after they moved base to the Polo Ground. The Polo Ground was owned by, and was the home to, the New York Giants of the National Football League.

In 1921, the New York Yankees won their first of the 29 American League (AL) pennants. The New York Yankees boast of players who, today, are the legends of the game. Players, such as **** Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Yogi Berra, among others, need no introduction.

The Stadium

In 1923, two years after being asked to vacate the Polo Grounds, the then owners - Colonels Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast L’Hommedieu Huston – opened their own ballpark on April 18, and named it the Yankee Stadium. The stadium was built on 10 acres of land purchased in West Bronx from the estate of William Waldorf Astoria for $675,000.

The Stadium took all of 284 working days to build, and had a striking feature - the 15-foot deep copper façade across the front of the roof – which exists in some form, even today. A new Yankee Stadium is being built, and is expected to be ready for the 2009 season.
