All Time Records of Some Baseball Teams

Sunday, May 31st, 2009
Aron Wallad asked:

Some Great Teams and Some Not So Great Teams

This posting was compiled after the the 2005 Season ended.

From 1919 to 1964 The New York Yankees had a winning season every year except 1925. Their two best years were 1939 of DiMaggio and Dickey when they were 106-45, a 702 winning percentage. Even better the Yankees of 1927 had a 714 winning percentage. **** Ruth and Lou Gehrig had something to do with that. The Yankees have scored 79,003 runs since they have been a major league team. They have surrendered 68,192 runs.

The highest all time winning percentages teams. The Yankees are first at 567% followed by The Giants at 540% The Dodgers at 524%. Then there is the Cardinals at 517 followed by The Red Sox at 515% and The Cubs at 514%. Yes The Cubs is accurate.

The lowest winning percentages are The Devil Rays at 401 % followed by The Padres at 459 % and The Phillies at a 468 winning percentage.
___________________________________________________________________

While looking at futility from 1930 to 1943 the St Louis Browns had a bit of a slump. They had a losing record every year and for the 14 years finished with 715 wins and 1325 losses ( 350 winning percentage ). Their high water or should I say low water mark of 111 losses came in 1939. In 1946 they started losing again. From and including 1946 through 1956 they were 645 1048 for a 380 winning percentage.

The Phillies have their own sad story. From 1918 to 1931 they had a 786 1310 record. Every year was a losing one. In 1932 they had a winning record only to return to losing again in 1933. This continued to 1948. During this time they had an 888 1555 record. A 363 winning percentage.

The A’s of Philadelphia won 736 games from 1934 to 1946. They also lost 1245 games.During these 13 years their winning percentage was 372. The city of Brotherly Love must have had some real dog days of summer with both their baseball teams suffering.

By contrast the Brooklyn Dodger won 1125 games and lost 656 from 1946 to 1956. During this 11 year period they finished first or second every year except one when they ended up in third place. Their six pennants and one World Series typified their 631 winning percentage during this time frame.

Other Facts The Boston Red Sox have a 500-496 record against the Yankees at home. When playing in New York the Red Sox are 399-582.

The Cubs have a home record of 4453-3716 and an away record of 3762-4333.

The Red Sox have an all time record of 8358-7885.

Mlb: Yankees Defeat the Indians With Wang’s Aid

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Stephen Lars asked:

Moments after defeating the Cleveland Indians by 1-0, the Yankees received a hard blow: For the first time in the season the Puerto Rican Jorge Posada will be in the injured list.

New York Yankees catcher Posada stated “It’s very disappointing, it is possibly the most disappointing moment of my career”. Posada has been suffering a chronic shoulder pain for more than a week now situation that has forced him to take a leave.

Before the arrival of the dreadful news about Posada, in seven innings Chien-Ming Wang overcame C.C. Sabathia who surrendered a home run to the Dominican Melky Cabrera; helping the Yankees breaks a record of three defeats.

Wang’s (5-0) contribution was great indeed; four hits, punched nine players basically his greater record of the season; besides becoming the unique winner of five games in the American League. Also, Wang carried out 113 throws taking the Yankees to average .500.

Joba Chamberlain did back up Wang; Chamberlain did a great job in the eighth inning during his first appearance in Cleveland since his second game of the 2007 playoffs.

The Panamanian Mariano Rivera helped during the ninth inning, for his rescue number seven of the season and the 450 in his career, a record that only Trevor Hoffman and Reads Smith had obtained before.

On the other hand, Torii Hunter and the Dominican Erick Aybar achieved three careers each one and helped Los Angeles Angels defeat 6-2 the Detroit Tigers in a series of three games.

The Angels have earned 10 of their last 14 games, which give Anaheim a total of 16 victories very close to Oakland Athletics in the leadership fight in the Western Division of the American League; their next game will be on Monday evening in Anaheim.

Hunter explained that “We can compete against any even in the position that we are in question of health”, “we do not have to our first opener, John Lackey or Kelvin Escobar due to injuries, but when we have them back, we will be even better”, added.

James Shields launched Sunday for the first time in the major leagues and Evan Longoria connected a home run; the Tampa Bay Blue Rays defeated 3-0 the Red Sox completing a series of three games.

Additionally, Tampa Bay won its 6th consecutive game achieving their best record since the July-August 2005 one.

In the American League games, the Athletics won by 4-2 to the Mariners, the Rangers defeated 6-1 the Twins, the Blue Jays overcame the Royals by 5-2, and the White Sox defeated 6-1 the Baltimore Orioles.

On the other hand, Brandon Webb surpassed Jake Peavy in a series of launches that contributed to the previous two Cy Young trophies of the National League; carrying Arizona Diamondbacks to a victory of 2-1 over San Diego Padres.

Consecutively, LA Dodgers James Loney marked a simple career advantage in the tenth inning sweeping the Colorado Rockies in three games by 3-2.

It’s the first time that the Dodgers achieve three consecutive triumphs in a season, under the lead of their new team manager Joe Tower, who utilized his 24th different alignment in 25 games, while continues to seek for efficient players. Tower advanced to the playoffs in 12 consecutive seasons with the New York Yankees.

New York Yankees Sports Tickets

Macie asked:

New York Yankees face depletion of their farm system because of various reasons trades, free agent acquisitions, the aging or departure of the players who had formed the core of the Yankees during the late 1990s and allegedly poor coaching. Buster Olney, in his book The Last Night of the New York Yankees Dynasty, argues that George Steinbrenner’s management style resulted in the players burning out psychologically. Sportswriter Larry Mahnken has jokingly proposed his theory in the form of “Curse of Clay Bellinger” meaning the New York Yankees will never again win the World Series until either they make amends to utility player Clay Bellinger who left following the 2001 season or they win the championship anyway. http://www.ticketmayor.com While quite a creative explanation by analogy with the Curse of the Bambino, this tautology is all a joke and not a thing to be taken seriously.

Several sabermetricians have argued that success in the playoffs is mostly the result of luck but the fact remains that the production of the New York Yankees’ core players has decreased steadily since their 1996 World Series title. But the New York Yankees are listening! They’ve seriously upgraded their pitching staff with Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, Mike Stanton, Felix Rodriguez and Randy Johnson but no one knows why Carlos Beltran wasn’t signed up. George Steinbrenner has his hopes up with Randy Johnson. He feels proud that the team has finally landed the greatest left-hander in the game, filling the void left last winter when Andy Pettitte departed for Houston and David Wells headed to San Diego as free agents. .

The 6-foot-10 Johnson joins a rotation that features Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and Kevin Brown. General manager Brian Cashman is all excited about the 41-year-old Big Unit, too as he was the man who made Yankees lose two championships in 1995 (American League Division Series) and 2001 (World Series). He gave the New York Yankees the bona fide No.1 starter. New York Yankees sent pitchers Javier Vazquez and Brad Halsey, catcher Dioner Navarro and Dollars9 million to the Diamondbacks for the five-time Cy Young Award winner, who passed his physical on Monday.

Major changes have been made for the New York Yankees 2007 season. Gary Sheffield has been traded off to Detroit for pitching prospects and pitcher Jaret Wright to the Orioles for Chris Britton. Japanese pitcher, Kei Igawa, signed a five-year contract with the Yankees, after he won the negotiating rights with a Dollars26 million bid. Former Yankee, Andy Pettitte, also signed up for the 2007 season. Randy Johnson was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Luis Vizcaìno, reliever. Three minor leaguers were also brought in. One of the famous and greatest Yankee hitting instructors, Don Mattingly has been promoted to bench coach and according to speculations that are doing rounds, Mattingle might even replace Joe Torre, the team skipper. Bernie Williams, the longest-tenured Yankee outfielder was offered the opportunity to join the non-roster Spring Training, but he declined.

The world’s first 200-million Dollars baseball team has appeared in 39 matches, out of which they won 26 World Series.

How Prices of Baseball Collectibles are Determined

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009
Jimmy Spier asked:

When you start your search for baseball collectibles, you may be wondering what constitutes a certain price for one keepsake versus another. There are many factors that come into play in determining the value of a piece of baseball memorabilia.

The first is the demand for the player or team representing your keepsake. If you specialize in baseball collectibles such as cards, then you want to make sure you’re paying a fair price for them.

When considering the price of any baseball collectible that has to do with a certain player, make sure you know his record and statistics. Is he in the Hall of Fame? Did he shatter other players’ records as he made his way to a top spot in the sport?

Rookie baseball collectibles may not give you the comfort you want in knowing for sure how valuable the keepsake will be. While it can be somewhat risky to invest in a piece of rookie memorabilia, it might also give you a chance to greatly profit from your initial investment.

Of course, you’re always going to find value in a baseball collectible from a player such as Mickey Mantle or Roberto Clemente. Any player that has become an idol for baseball fans is a good pick for your memorabilia treasure trove. For team collectibles, the Yankees have more people seeking their collectibles than any other team.

The condition of the baseball collectible is another important factor in its price and value. A card in mint condition that has been cared for will fetch more than a card that’s bent or has a smudge on it.

Another aspect of what makes a baseball collectible priced right is whether or not it’s a hard to find or limited edition. If something is mass-produced, then it will decrease in value.

Probably most important is the “you” factor. What is this particular baseball collectible worth to you? Is it something you just have to have - an item you’ve been searching for and finally found? Or is it something you could live without?

Baseball collectibles, like memorabilia in any other sport, have price tags based on demand, value to the current owner, and value to prospective buyers as well. Make sure you do your homework with a published price guide to compare how an item is priced for you versus what it’s selling for around the world. With today’s access to online auctions and dealers, you might be able to find the item you want at a price you can afford.

Does the regular season mean anything in baseball?

Saturday, May 9th, 2009
rtyew asked:

Everyone thought the tigers were done when they went 19-31 and blew the division title and the twins finished the season on a roll. But in the playoffs, it was the tigers who got hot and the twins who got swept out of the first round. Three out of four of the first round series were also won by the team without homefield advantage. And it wasn’t that shocking that the yankees lost, since they lose every year.
