Mlb - Andy Pettitte Will Stay With the Yankees

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009
Audrey Nolan asked:

After months of negotiations the pitcher Andy Pettitte decided to stay with the New York Yankees rather than going back to the Houston Astros. Pettitte had to accept the cut of the offer he had two months ago of $10 million to a $5.5 million one year deal, which is almost half of what he was expecting; however he could probably make some extras, resembling in incentives it will be around $6.5 million, that sum will be divided in $4.5 million based on the innings and $2 million if he stays active in the team’s roaster. So, adding those bonuses it would make almost a $12 million deal.

Andy’s agent Randy Hendricks said that if everything goes fine and he plays like he has done before, he can attain more earnings and there will be no regrets.  If not, it will be just one of those lessons you get from life itself and of the good or bad negotiations you can make in a professional baseball career.

“Heck, the bottom line is I’m a man, and I guess it does take a shot at your pride a little bit,” said the New York Yankees pitcher. “But when you put all that aside, I wanted to play for the New York Yankees and, you know, that was the bottom line. I wanted to be there. I wanted to play in that new stadium”

In 2007 Pettitte signed a 1 year deal with the New York Yankees that was worth $16 million, with an open option to stay for one more year with the same salary. During the first season Pettitte had an excellent record, however, last season his record was not that good due in part to a shoulder ache that bothered him in the final part of the season. Pettitte finished 14-14 with a 4.54 ERA, but for his last 11 starts he went 2-7, 6.23.
___________________________________________________________________

So, after the Yankees initially cut the pitcher’s salary for this season to $10 million, Pettitte’s agents thought that he could get a better deal from another team, perhaps in a multi-year deal or something of that sort, but since the decision of retirement has been wandering around on Andy’s mind at the end of the last three seasons and he is 36 years old now, he figured out that he would like to play the rest of his time with the Yankees.

The Yankees withdrew his first offer to Andy when they finally signed first base Mark Teixeira in an 8 year contract of $180 million; that deal combined with the contracts of CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett summed a total of $423.5 million that the Yankees spent.

Pettitte’s desire of ending his playing time with the Yankees is understandable due to he has spent the most of his career with them; this is the team where he started his professional career in 1995 and he stayed with them for nine consecutive seasons. In 2003 Pettitte left the Yankees to sign a 3 year contract with the Houston Astros that was worth $31.5 million. Two years later, in 2005, Pettitte helped the Astros to get into to the World Series for the first time. He stayed with the Astros until the 2006 season and after that we went back to the Yankees.

In his career, Pettite has attained four World Series championships with the Yankees and made it to the playoffs in every year except for 2006 and 2008.

Anyhow, we wish the best to Andy and we hope this year will not be the last for him, since he is a great pitcher. We expect he can achieve a lot of good things this 2009 season and show some of his experience and talent in the baseball field with the Yankees.

Babe Ruth Baseball Cards, Still A Good Investment?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009
Veronica Davis asked:
___________________________________________________________________

The legend of **** Ruth is still just as much alive today than it was during his reign of baseball in the early 1900’s. There isn’t a baseball fanatic, or baseball cards collector in the world that would not want to get their hands on an official **** Ruth baseball card, and he continues to have die-hard fans that weren’t even thought of being born when he was hitting home runs.

Babe Ruth, born in Baltimore Maryland was actually named George Herman Ruth Jr., but became known by many names including The Great Bambino, The Home Run King, and The Sultan of Swat. His record speaks for itself with 714 home runs which remained unbeatable by baseball players to follow for an astounding 39 years. He was born to Kate Schamberger-Ruth and George Herman Ruth, Sr., but did not live out his entire childhood with them. They worked long hours, and when **** Ruth was seven years old his father took him to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys and gave them custody of him. There, he didn’t conform well to their rigid environment. Family visiting days were not even highlights he could look forward to because his family didn’t come to visit.

As you can see, his father was not to be thanked for enhancing his then, unreal baseball abilities. The man who has the right to that claim is Brother Matthias of the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, who eventually became a father figure of sorts. He played on the school’s baseball team, starting out as a catcher, and then given the chance to play the pitcher’s position. His talent was evident. **** Ruth was signed to the Baltimore Orioles at the age of 19 by their owner, Jack Dunn. It was during this time that he obtained the nick name Babe, because people viewed him as “Jack’s newest babe”… Jack Dunn had the reputation as a top scout at that time. The Orioles were a Boston Red Sox minor league team, but Ruth’s contract was bought out by the Red Sox after playing on the Orioles for only five months. He was now playing with the big boys in the major league.

Babe Ruth is, of course, mostly known for his amazing batting talent. However, for the first six years on the Boston Red Sox he was a pitcher. He set unbelievable records, in both pitching and batting positions in the years to follow. Good times rolled for the Red Sox until 1919, when Harry Frazee became the new owner of the team and chose to sell Ruth to the Ney York Yankees. What did he get in return for handing over the legend in this transaction? Ruth was sold for $100,000 and a $350,000 loan that Frazee in turn used to finance his Broadway productions dream.

It was this turn of events that led to the “Curse of the Bambino”. The Yankees experienced tremendous victories, while the Red Sox wouldn’t earn a World Series title again until many years later in 2004. The legend of **** Ruth will always carry on, and the Curse will always be felt in the heart of Red Sox fans. Therefore, **** Ruth baseball cards will always be highly sought after.

What was the best baseball game that you ever attended?

Sunday, March 15th, 2009
The ~Muffin~ Man asked:

It has to be a game that you saw in person. It doesn’t have to be a game that had playoff implications or even be a postseason game.

For me, it’s a toss up between the Montreal Expos-Toronto Blue Jays game on July 1st, 1997. Jeff Juden (oh my, where are they now) took a no-no into the 8th inning and beat Clemens in front of 50,000+ on Canada Day. The other game was Game 3 of the ALDS between the Yankees and A’s in 2001, when Jeremy Giambi was called out at home because that bleeping Jeter relayed to Posada…

The New York Yankees are the only team to win 26 World Series titles.

The baseball stars from the National League team as well as the American League team had played the first All-Star Game in 1933. The National League had won around forty of the seventy-three games played by them. The game had ended in a draw twice. In the year 1961, torrential rain in Boston prohibited extra innings. The game had ended in a 1-1 draw. Later in the year 2002, the game went on till eleven innings with the score fixed at seven. Finally it was cancelled due to a lack of pitchers.

Cal Ripken, Jr. of Baltimore Orioles had not missed a single game in sixteen years of his play. He played in 2,632 successive games starting from April 30, 1982 to Sept. 19, 1998.

Pete Rose, playing for the Cincinnati Reds holds the record for most number of hits (4,256) and the most number of games played (3,562). He was, however, banned from the game of baseball, for betting gambles while he was the team manager.

In the year 2001, San Francisco’s Barry Bonds had broken the unprecedented single-season home run record. He had hit seventy three. He surpassed the target run of seventy, which was set by St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire in 1998.

Talented pitcher Nolan Ryan has played twenty-seven seasons in a major league baseball. He is also known for striking out more number of batters in his entire career as compared to any other pitcher.

Philadelphia A’s manager Connie Mack has to his credit 3,755 career victories. It is a glorious career, and a better record than any other manager has in baseball history.

A museum was created in the year 1935 to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of baseball.

What Every Sales Person Could Learn From the Yankees

Thursday, March 12th, 2009
Lee Salz asked:

This is the time of year when salespeople begin to reflect on their performance. Was it a good year? Was it a great year? Some will say they earned the dollars they desired, so it was a great year. Others will hang their hat on an account that they won and say it was a good year. However, as Joe Torre, former manager of the New York Yankees recently learned, employers have a single data point for measuring success that dwarfs all other statistics.

As the New York Yankees were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, the rumors began to swirl that their manager, Joe Torre, was not got going to be asked to return as manager in 2008. He had just finished the last year of a three-year contract, which meant there were decisions to be made. Interestingly, many have said that his best managerial year was 2007, a year in which the team was eliminated early in the post-season. As manager of the Yankees, he took the team to the post-season every one of the twelve years while at the helm. No other team is enjoying a streak of this magnitude, but it wasn’t enough for team executives.

Following the Yankees’ elimination from the post-season, the executives of the team met to discuss their plans for 2008. Did Joe Torre belong as manager of the team next year? Many fans were confused as to how this could even be a question. Twelve consecutive years in the post-season and 4 World Series victories make his return a no-brainer. How could a team not reward him with a new, larger, guaranteed contract?

As Joe Torre described, he arrived at the Yankees’ executive meeting in Tampa and saw a room full of successful business executives who were looking to continue that success. Joe is a former baseball player, broadcaster, and manager, but not typically referred to as a business professional. He was caught off guard by the business presence in the room. What took place next was even more interesting.

The team told him that they desired his return in 2008. However, they wanted to restructure his compensation plan. They offered him a salary that was significantly lower than what he had been paid in the past. The plan included incentives that, if achieved, made the contract worth more than the prior one. Torre was confused and offended by the offer. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, “The Steinbrenners explained their rationale for cutting his base salary 29 percent — the team hadn’t met the organization’s goal of winning the World Series for seven seasons.” During his prior three-year contract, the team failed to even reach the World Series. In Yankees terms, this is also known as an eternity. Joe declined the contract offer and elected not to return to the team.

Following the meeting, the president of the team shared that the New York Yankees pay for performance. They want to make sure that the person responsible for the goal is compensated for achieving and exceeding it. In the military, this is called “making mission.” Torre was quoted as saying, “The fact that somebody is reducing your salary is telling me they’re not satisfied with what you’re doing.” Yankees president, Randy Levine, had a different interpretation when he said the Yankees believed it was “important to motivate people, as most people in everyday life have to be, based on performance.”

Most businesses have specified business objectives. In some, there are revenue targets. In others, the target is an improvement in margin. Still others desire both or have even different objectives. In any case, to achieve those objectives, company executives formulate compensation plans to ensure that their sales leadership and sales people have their eye on the prize. The prize is made very clear to the team. Failing to achieve the business objective is not an area for discussion.

Just like in baseball, sales is full of statistics, metrics, and measurements. On any given day, one can make a case for promoting or firing just about any member of the sales team. During review time, the business leaders go back to the specified objective. Did the team make mission? Sure, great things happen throughout the year, things for which to be proud. However, at the end of the day, there is one key for the sales professional. Was mission achieved? Joe Torre is described as a great man, a classy individual. Sometimes these terms are used to describe members of a sales team. However, those characteristics don’t result in pay increases or promotions. Companies pay for performance. This is performance that ties back to the business objective.

It is not uncommon to find sales professionals who fail to meet the business objective, which is usually quota, citing various statistics and anecdotes to show that there is value in their performance. Yes, there is value, but something simple is missing; bottom line. The business objective was not met. The bottom line for sales people is that they need to understand the business objective, identify what they need to achieve it, and deliver the expected results. At the end of the day, that is the only way sales people will be measured.

Baseball Outside the States

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
Jimmy Spier asked:

The baseball in the United States goes up with the 1840s, but much of other countries took and played the sport little then. To Cuba, the students who fell under the system of education of the United States returned to the house to the nation of island with a beater and a ball. The popularity of the play in Cuba was so high as for are considered a part of the identity during the war for independence during the late 1800s.

The Spaniards supposed that the matter practice and the teams of baseball were right a cover-up so that the preparation will make the war. In all the area of the Caribbean, the cuban players drew aside their recently discovered knowledge which increased the popularity of the play. They was two cuban brothers who carried the play to Dominican Dominican Republic and Cubans in the country of Venezuela with the nationals vénézuéliens who had matriculated in the UNITED STATES brought the sport to Venezuela, starting in 1895 and in the island of Puerto Rico in 1897.

In Mexico, they was also Cubans who had saved island during his fights for the independence which brought the baseball to Mexico. The Cubans in Mexico were helped by the commercial soldiers of marine of the UNITED STATES and the workmen of railroad. Various areas of Mexico were converted into sport during the years of 1877 to 1899. In terms of popularity, the sport of the baseball is the number one in Cuba, in Dominican Dominican Republic and in Venezuela with a strong appearance in Puerto Rico.

Mexico always places football like sport dominating. In Central America, the baseball is also very popular. In the United States, the players of Latin America and Puerto Rico became an increasing force in the principal baseball of league. There are the professional leagues organized in Venezuela, in Puerto Rico, in Mexico and in Dominican Dominican Republic.

As in the rest of the world, football (football) is incontestably the most popular sport in Latin America. However, it is also true that in a great part of the basin of the Caribbean, the baseball is the sport of the number one. In fact, where the imperial power of the UNITED STATES drew aside in the whole world, and in Latin America specifically, the influence of the baseball was strongest. During a military trade, much of country were presented at the American baseball.

It was said to him that if Fidel Castro had been a better player of baseball, the history of the cold war could have played outside very differently. Castro is an avid ventilator and has in the past played the game. The reverse is also true: The El Duque d’ Orlando Hernandez left Cuba in 2000 and played for New York Yankees of the series of the world.

The season of baseball in Latin America extends as from October at January. Gaining of the four national leagues meet in February to play the series of the Caribbean. The Mexican players take part in a minor league of summer which maintains the relations with the governing body of minor baseball of league of the UNITED STATES. Mexico was given the statute of triple A. There are also the Dominican Dominican Republic and the leagues beginners of summer vénézuélien which are subsidiary with the minor baseball of league.

Although the professional baseball existed in Cuba of 1878 until 1961, it was removed by the cuban government on professional level. The cuban national team now dominates the contests of amateur of the world, gaining gold medals in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996.

Approximately 30 percent of the principal players of league in the baseball today are connected in Latin America of a certain fashion. They are the Latin America or are descendants of the Latin Americans who grew in the United States. In the general population, only eleven percent of the people are the Latin America. The Latin players of baseball primordially are constant foreigner and claim Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela and the Dominican Dominican Republic like birthplace.

Unfortunately, some of the principal teams gained a reputation for almost an approach of bagne to the academies of baseball in the Latin-American area. Young boys with the talent are signed and sent to these modes of formation where life is hard in the hopes to gain a contract with one of the principal clubs. Several of these players travel to Latin America to play the games of baseball of league of winter in the Latin-American leagues.

The countries in the basin of the Caribbean which are enthusiasts of baseball send the national teams with titles of championship to take part in the series of the Caribbean of the world every year since 1949. For players of Latin-American descent, the occasion to play in the principal baseball of league is high success and enormous financial profit.

Starting in 2006, the traditional one of baseball of the world enters the United States, Puerto Rico, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Dominican Republic and Venezuela, was held. Nicaragua was not present, but Cuba sent a team. The tournament was gained by Japan, which was an enormous surprise for much if not the majority of the observers.

Saying Goodbye to the Old Yankees Stadium

Sunday, March 1st, 2009
Paul Wise asked:

The current Yankee Stadium is not having a facelift or a makeover but has a new site just across the road. It will be bigger, better, and stuffed with all the modern amenities you can find in modern ballparks the likes of U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. It will be a great place to watch big event games. Non-ticket holders can shop for Yankees memorabilia, and snack in one of the many cafes, including Hard Rock Café.

The crowd that watched the last game, Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles, witnessed the last game played in the historical stadium. The sold out crowd cheered baseball greats, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, and Whitey Ford, imprinting the scene in their minds before curtain call.

This was “The House That Ruth Built” in 1923. 85 years later, it is now going to retire. An old guard giving way to the new stadium adjacent to it. The new Yankees Stadium will not fail to please baseball funs with its added modern features to compensate for the loss of The House That Ruth Built.

Project Location

The countdown to the much-awaited opening of the new Yankee Stadium in April 16, 2009 is just a few months away. The perimeters are already walled up, the front façade in place and seats waiting to be filled. The stadium is located a little north of the current stadium along 161st and 164th streets, and between River and Jerome Avenues.

New Features

The new Yankees Stadium, a Major League Professional Baseball Park will occupy 22 acres of Macombs Dam Park and John Mullaly Park. As a concession to its notable heritage, it will have the pre-renovation look of the original stadium and feature a replica of the famous copper frieze.

The modern Stadium designed by Kansas City’s HOK Sport will retain the same field dimensions of the current stadium but will have the following new features:

? Two structures

? Upward bowl seating arrangements

? Cup holders in the lower bowl seats

? More legroom

? Wider seats

? More restrooms

? Wider video scoreboard

? 60 luxury boxes

? Split upper deck design

? Added parking spaces

? New Monument Park

The Cost of the New Stadium

The much talked about $1.3 billion Yankees stadium is the second costliest stadium after London’s Wimbley Stadium. The Yankees is financing $1.1 billion of the total cost. New York City is forking out $220 million, and $75 for parking facilities and stadium related projects on and near the project site.

Seating Capacity

When the original Yankee Stadium was built, it was ambitiously designed to seat 58,000 fans. The new ballpark will seat 51,000 spectators and have standing room space for 2,000 more. The number does not include the seating capacity of the 60 luxury boxes.

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices at the new stadium will be lower. Bleacher tickets will be down by $2, grandstand seats are $20 to $25, loge level seats or Terrace level are $40-$75, and main seats $45 to $100.

Transportation

Since the new Yankees Stadium is along the same transport route, there are no major changes. The same bus lines and New York City subway will be added with the Metro-North Railroad being constructed presently to serve commuters from Manhattan and New York suburbs in the north.
