Is this the beginning of the end of American Baseball?

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008
bjmarchini asked:

Baseball has been struggling more and more over the last few decades. The Strike. the Steroid frenzy, The Yankees tyring to buy championships. The Red Sox finally winning a championship. Franchises on the verge of bankruptcy with spending out of control

After reading the yahoo article on how the Boston redsocks are willing to pay 51 million for the right talk to a player from Japan, it makes me utterly sick.

I can’t help but wondering if we are seeing the end of Baseball as a professional sport in the same league as the NFL, NBA and NHL (although this is only a quasi league anyway.

I think the only thing left is to break everything up and restructure, but then what are you left with. I grew up playing teeball. Watch baseball. My kids grew up playing soccer. They watch the NBA and NFL. If they had a choice between going to a ball game and chuckee Cheese, I think I would end up shelling out money for those tokens.

My Baseball Appreciation List

Aron Wallad asked:

I am listing some of the achievements in baseball that I have a deep appreciation for.

This list will continue to grow as I think about this great game.

Hank Aaron - Hitting 715 Home Runs - Okay 755 Home Runs

What must it have been like to chase a legend? **** Ruth’s record of 714 lifetime homers was a record I never thought would be passed. I read and heard on television what it was like when Hank approached Babe’s magic number of 714 lifetime round trippers. Hank received **** mail. Some of the letters were threats to kill him. Imagine getting a letter describing how you would be shot while you stood in the outfield. The FBI was called in to investigate some of the letters Hank received. Through it all Hank Aaron continued his climb and finally surpass the Bambino. An amazing accomplishment given the circumstances. His detractors were actively trying to annoy, threaten and distract Hank. Just for being a great player and being black. Just for playing, and excelling at the game he loved to play.

Barry Bonds Hitting 73 Home Runs in 2001

At the age of 36 Barry Bonds put on a hitting display that captured America’s attention. People that were not tuned to baseball, started to glance at this display of power. Yeah, I know it has been said that he took steroids. While I am not condoning the use of steroids - I am appreciative of the year he had. Balls were flying all over and out of the field. McCovey Cove, a boat basin just beyond the right field stands, had boat people docked and poised to catch the next Bonds home run. Fans were suing each other for a home run hit into the bleachers. This was an amazing display of power. There seemed to be a frenzy associated with Barry’s climb to immortality.

Denny McLain winning 30 Games In 1968 In 1934 Dizzy Dean won 30 games for the St Louis Cardinals. He was the last man to win 30 before Denny McLain. Since Denny McLain won his 30; no one has accomplished that number. Over the last 71 baseball seasons (from 1934 to 2005) Denny McLain

has been the only pitcher to win 30 games in a season. Many pitchers won 30 prior to Dizzy’s great 1934 season, like Walter Johnson, Smoky Joe Wood, and Christy Mathewson to name a few. Grover Cleveland Alexander won 30 or more, three years in a row. Denny Mclain sure had one heck of a year in 1968.

Yankees Winning Five World Championships from 1949 to 1953

Excellence personified. - Putting it all into perspective of what a great run of World Championships that was. There were few teams have put together long championship runs, in any sport. Winning twice in a row is quite an accomplishment. Winning three times in a row has only happened twice in baseball history from 1900 to present day. The Oakland A’s did it from 1972 to 1974.

With Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers leading the team. And the New York Yankees from 1998 to 2000 with Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams and Mariano Rivera also had a three peat. The Yanks won four in a row from 1936 to 1939 with Lou Gehrig Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey and Lefty Gomez. The Yankees hit the all time streak with their teams from 1949 to 1953. Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto and Whitey Ford anchored those teams. Beating Brooklyn in ‘49,’52, ‘53 Philadelphia in ‘50 and the Giants in ‘51.

Winning two years in a row is pretty tough. Three years very tough. Four and five year runs are next to impossible. It is a test of endurance, a will to win and focusing on what needs to be done.

Feel free to pass this article on to anyone you think would be pleased to read it.

New York Yankee Tickets – Saving Bonds?

Sunday, December 28th, 2008
Morgan Dunn asked:

New York Yankees tickets are already among the most difficult tickets to come by in all of sports. What if you added the all-time home run king to the mix? There are rumors floating around that the Bronx Bombers are considering adding the biggest baseball bomber of all time, Barry Bonds, to their roster. Bonds has spent the 2008 season at home thus far. The all-time leader in career home runs (762) and home runs in a single season (73) could provide the Yankees with some added power down the stretch.

In the wake of injuries to Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada, among others, the Yankees are not leaving any stone unturned as far potential moves that could improve their lineup go. The 44-year-old Bonds hit 28 home runs for the San Francisco Giants last season in just 126 games. He’s obviously got some pop left in his bat, which is why it’s been so surprising that no American League team has jumped at the opportunity to insert him as a designated hitter. The famous short porch in right field at Yankee stadium is conducive to left-handed hitters and there’s no reason to think Bonds couldn’t thrive in pinstripes.

Some teams may be worried about image issues that would accompany the slugger, considering all the steroid controversy and perjury charges that surround Bonds, but the Yankees are as bold a franchise as any in pro sports. Hank Steinbrenner, like his father, puts winning before everything else and will take a hard look at any transaction that could help the team. The Yankees aren’t exactly set at the DH either. The club recently claimed Richie Sexson off waivers after he was released by the Mariners, but he’s no superstar. Bonds would be a liability in the field at this stage of his career, thus DH would seem to suit him well. One would also think that Bonds would have fans clamoring to get New York Yankees tickets even more so than they already are, another paramount consideration for the Steinbrenner family.

As of July 24th, the Yankees are just 3.5 games out of first place in the American League East and have been on a tear since the All-Star break. Bonds could give the push that the club is looking for to take them to the next level. However, with the club playing so well, do they want to mess with whatever is working for them right now? No matter what happens in the Bronx this summer and into the fall, it’s bound to be interesting and make New York Yankees tickets a hot commodity.

Does anyone know where to find the NJ baseball caps?

Thursday, December 25th, 2008
quaycur asked:

There are some awesome New Jersey hats I have seen around–the lettering is close the the NY of the Yankees hat, but it’s an NJ instead, and the J kind of wraps around the N. I have heard that they were made just to rep for Jersey, not in conjuntion with any sports team, yet I can’t find them anywhere. Places I looked: Newark (specifically around Penn Station and in the Iron Bound), The Willowbrook Mall–both to no avail. Suggestions?

Booking New York Yankees Tickets

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008
Al Terry asked:

The New York Yankees refer to a Major League Baseball team situated in the region of The Bronx, in the city of New York. In short the team is often called “the Yanks”. The most popular nickname for the team is “the Bronx Bombers” or more simply “the Bombers”. Critics of the group have also given it the name of “the Bronx Zoo” or “the Evil Empire”. Surprisingly, the fans have accepted these names. Procuring New York Yankees tickets is a craze among their fans all over of the western world.

About New York Yankees

The New York Yankees club was set up in 1901 at Baltimore in Maryland. It was initially called Baltimore Orioles. In 1903, it was renamed as the New York Highlanders. The Yankees are a popular group, which has won 26 World Series titles and 39 American League Pennants. This makes it the most successful team in North American professional sports history, overtaking the Montreal Canadians’ 24 titles in 1999. They are also the sole team having a representative in the National Baseball Hall of Fame at every position. They are believed to have faced all the winners of the National League pennant in the World Series apart from the Houston Astros.

The beginning of the season in 2007 saw Alex Rodriguez as the first player in the League history to homer 10 times in his club’s first 14 games. In May 7 2007, the Yankees became one of the first teams in MLB history who used ten different starting pitchers in its primary thirty games.

The new high tech Yankee stadium is under construction and is planned for an opening in 2009. Until then the present stadium is being used. Even after the new stadium is built, a part of the old stadium will be preserved.

The Popularity Of New York Yankees Tickets

The Yankees have always been a very popular team. Thus the craze for New York Yankees tickets is huge. Their fan population is huge. Their fans are not only restricted to New York but also feature in towns like Baltimore, Boston, Toronto and Tampa Bay.

1920 was the first one-million fan season for the Yankees. That year 1,289,422 fans were present for the Yankee games at the Polo Grounds. 1946 was the first two-million fan season. That year 2,265,512 fans came to cheer for the games at Yankee Stadium. In the year 2005, the team had a record fan following of 4,090,696! With this you can well gauge the craze for New York Yankees tickets.

You can buy New York Yankees tickets at the stadium itself but it depends on how strong a luck factor you have. With the millions of fans your chance to procure New York Yankees tickets gets limited. The other option is to get your New York Yankees tickets from a ticket broker. This organization is quite well known and it has served thousands of customers who are highly satisfied with their service. It is known for its customer orientation, prompt and reliable service and reasonable pricing of New York Yankees tickets.

Bernie Williams is not Convinced of Returning to the Yankees

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008
Cindy Ferguson asked:

Position players complied with their physical and medical exams on Monday just before their practice. However, Williams did not arrive and has not communicated his decision to Torre, head coach, either. What rests in everyone’s mind is that no one is sure of his return.

Williams has played for the Yankees since the start of his career back in 1985 on his 17th birthday and six years later he moved up to the major league in 1991.

The reason for him not to show up is due to the fact that Melky Cabrera was assigned as the fourth outfielder and Jason Giambi has been elected as hitter and first baseman. These changes caused there to be no room for a fifth outfielder and Williams would not be counted within the team’s regular roster.

Cashman, Torre and teammates have made several attempts to contact Williams but all have been unsuccessful and everyone is certain that he will not return until Torre fully convinces him to.

Although some say Williams is not likely to play for another team, after being with the Yankees for 22 years, but has not informed anyone that he will be retiring before the start of the Major League Baseball season.

Resentment is obvious in this matter but only time will tell if Williams decides to go back or retire. Torre left the first day of practice due to his cold and has not made any comments regarding the situation to reporters or any type official announcement.

As for teammates, manager and coach all feel it would a shame to loose a player like Bernie Williams.
